If you have a lead acid battery, then taping the wire directly to the battery terminal is generally not recommended. This is because lead acid batteries release hydrogen gas when they are charging, and this gas can be explosive if it comes into contact with an ignition source (like a spark from your wire).
There are two ways to wire batteries together, parallel and series. The illustrations below show how these set wiring variations can produce different voltage and amp hour outputs. In the graphics we’ve used sealed lead acid batteries but the concepts of how units are connected is true of all battery types.
Alligator clips are inexpensive and easy to use, and they’ll allow you to quickly and easily connect and disconnect your wire from the battery. Just be careful not to over-tighten the clips, as this can damage the battery terminal. This is probably the most common way of attaching a wire to a battery without soldering.
Take one end of one piece of wire and wrap it tightly around the positive (+) terminal on the AA battery. Make sure that there is good contact between the metal and the terminal; if necessary, use your fingers to slightly bend the end of the wire so that it makes firm contact with all sides of the terminal.
It’s usually better to use some kind of connector (like a bolt or clamp) to attach the wire to the terminal. If you have any other kind of battery (lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, etc.), then taping the wire directly to the terminal should be fine.
Flow batteries and other chemistries. These are commonly available in 48V. Multiple batteries can connect in parallel without any issues. Each battery has its own battery management system. Together they will generate a total state of charge value for the whole battery bank. A GX monitoring device is needed in the system.
