IATA have updated the battery guidance document to reflect the revisions made in the 2025-2026 edition of the ICAO Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (Technical Instructions) and the 66th edition (2025) of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).
Vehicles only powered by lithium metal batteries or lithium ion batteries must be assigned to UN 3171, Battery-powered vehicle. Lithium batteries installed in cargo transport units, designed only to provide power external to the transport unit must be assigned to UN 3536, Lithium batteries installed in cargo transport unit.
Shippers of lithium or sodium ion batteries prepared in accordance with Section II of the lithium battery packing instructions are not subject to the formal dangerous goods training requirements set out in DGR 1.5. However, persons preparing such shipments must be provided with “adequate instruction” as described in DGR 1.6.
The marking and labelling requirements of Section 7 for Class 9 (UN 3090 or UN 3480) lithium metal and lithium ion batteries apply. A copy of the document of approval including the quantity limitations must accompany the consignment. Transport in accordance with this special provision must be noted on the Shipper's Declaration.
The employer must identify the different configurations of batteries that they ship, i.e. batteries by themselves - sodium ion batteries, lithium batteries and/or batteries packed with equipment and/or batteries contained in equipment, or combinations of these batteries and equipment provisions.
(387) Lithium batteries in conformity with 3.9.2.6.1(f) containing both primary lithium metal cells and rechargeable lithium ion cells must be assigned to UN 3090 or UN 3091, as appropriate.
