The safety standard for stationary batteries for energy storage applications, non-chemistry specific and including electrochemical capacitor systems or hybrid electrochemical capacitor and battery systems, is included in this document. It covers requirements for unique technologies such as flow batteries and sodium beta (i.e., sodium sulfur and sodium nickel chloride).
As the industry for battery energy storage systems (BESS) has grown, a broad range of H&S related standards have been developed. There are national and international standards, those adopted by the British Standards Institution (BSI) or published by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), CENELEC, ISO, etc.
