The Northern Cape continues to cement its status as a powerhouse in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, with three significant battery energy storage projects achieving financial close.
South Africa is transitioning toward a low carbon economy. The government has adopted the Integrated Resource Plan 2019 (IRP) and intends to add more than 20,000 MW of wind and solar energy generation capacity, with their share in the country’s energy mix growing from the current 3% to 24% by 2030.
“BESS technology plays a transformative role in South Africa’s energy landscape, improving the grid’s resilience and supporting the nation’s shift toward a sustainable, low-carbon future,” said Fourie. Rendered images of what the Oasis BESS projects are envisioned to look like are included below.
Working closely with leading global battery and balance-of-plant suppliers, Globeleq estimates that the project will require an investment of approximately US$300 million and will take 24 months to construct after financial close, which is expected in 2024.
