Fast charging strategies degrade the electric vehicle batteries the most. Normal charging is a suitable charging strategy to provide a long battery life. Battery ageing relates to planning of public charging infrastructure in society. Introducing electric vehicles in society requires access to charging infrastructure and a robust electric grid.
Regarding charging methods, new energy private cars mainly rely on slow charging, supplemented by fast charging; other operating vehicles mainly rely on fast charging, supplemented by slow charging.
A literature review on how electric vehicle charging strategies affect the batteries. There is a trade-off between goals of faster charging and a longer battery lifetime. Fast charging strategies degrade the electric vehicle batteries the most. Normal charging is a suitable charging strategy to provide a long battery life.
Regarding the charging methods for new energy private cars (Fig. 5.10), the fast charging duration is mainly concentrated within 2 h, with vehicles with a duration within 2 h accounting for 93.3%; the distribution of slow charging duration is relatively dispersed, with vehicles with a duration of 2–6 h accounting for 60%.
It is noted that an EV owner often changes between different charging protocols, i.e., charging levels, for the same vehicle, from normal charging to fast charging, and that the EVs are seldom used for charging/discharging from 0%–100%, resulting in additional charging cycles contributing to battery degradation .
It is concluded that fast charging strategies may degrade the EV batteries the most, especially if fast charging is done at very high or low temperatures without the proper thermal management. Battery degradation is a non-linear process and the battery capacity of an EV is difficult to estimate.
